Tell Doctors About Your Illness

Find out what happens when you visit a hospital in Thailand, from getting a queue ticket and having your blood pressure checked, to seeing a specialist, collecting medicine from the pharmacist, and booking a follow-up appointment. You’ll learn how to describe your symptoms to a nurse or doctor, the difference between two Thai words for pain, which number to call in an emergency, and useful vocabulary for illnesses and injuries. The lesson ends with a 10-question quiz where you practise answering the nurse’s question about what’s wrong.

Thai Vocabulary:
เป็นอะไรมา (bpen à-rai maa) – What’s wrong? / What brings you here?
ปวด (bpùat) – To ache (ongoing pain)
เจ็บ (jèp) – To hurt / to be sore
หมอเฉพาะทาง (mɔ̌ɔ chà-pɔ́ taang) – Specialist doctor
แพ้ยา (pɛ́ɛ yaa) – To be allergic to medicine

Knowing these phrases can make a real difference if you, or someone with you, ever needs medical help in Thailand.
