Short Comments

Ever seen Thai comments or chat messages full of short letter combinations you can’t find in any dictionary? This lesson explores the abbreviations Thai people use when typing online, from everyday shortcuts to ways of softening rude words and insults. You’ll learn why Thais shorten words, how to spot an abbreviation in a sentence, and the full words behind each one. You’ll also hear the word โผล่ (phlòo), meaning “to pop up / appear.”

Thai Abbreviations:
ขก – ขี้เกียจ (khîi-gìat) – Lazy
คถ – คิดถึง (khít-thʉ̌ng) – Miss (someone)
มปร – ไม่เป็นไร (mâi bpen rai) – Never mind / No problem
ตปท – ต่างประเทศ (dtàang-bprà-thêet) – Abroad
คหสต – ความคิดเห็นส่วนตัว (khwaam-khít-hěn sùan-dtua) – Personal opinion

Once you know these, reading Thai social media becomes much less confusing!
