Opaque - Dull - Bright

In this Easy Thai lesson, you’ll learn three Thai words that describe clarity and brightness, and how two of them combine into a dramatic expression straight out of a Thai soap opera. You’ll start with things that look blurry or foggy, then move on to dull skin, and finish with a radiant glow. Each word is built up step by step in short, repeated phrases.

Thai Vocabulary:
มัว (mua) – Blurry / foggy / dim
ตามัว (taa mua) – Blurred vision
กระจกมัว (grà-jòk mua) – Foggy mirror
หมอง (mɔ̌ɔng) – Dull / lacklustre
ผิวหมอง (phǐw mɔ̌ɔng) – Dull skin
ผ่อง (phɔ̀ng) – Bright / radiant
ขาวผ่อง (khǎao phɔ̀ng) – Radiantly fair
มัวหมอง (mua mɔ̌ɔng) – Tarnished (reputation)

The lesson ends with a playful line: เธอทำให้ฉันมัวหมอง เธอต้องแต่งงานกับฉัน (thəə tham hâi chǎn mua mɔ̌ɔng, thəə tɔ̂ng tɛ̀ng-ngaan gàp chǎn) – “You’ve tarnished my reputation, you must marry me!”
