Hope

What does it mean to have hope, to lose it, or to carry the hopes of others? This lesson explores the many ways Thai people talk about hope, from wishing for better health and a brighter future to feeling let down when things don’t go to plan. You’ll see how one root word builds a whole family of expressions, hear them used in real-life situations like job hunting, family expectations and unrequited love, and pick up a popular Thai saying (plus its joking twist) for everyday conversation.

Thai Vocabulary:
ความหวัง (khwaam wǎng) – Hope
หมดหวัง / สิ้นหวัง (mòt wǎng / sîn wǎng) – Hopeless / In despair
สมหวัง (sǒm wǎng) – To get what you hoped for
ผิดหวัง (phìt wǎng) – Disappointed
คาดหวัง (khâat wǎng) – To expect
แบกรับความหวัง (bàek ráp khwaam wǎng) – To carry the weight of others’ hopes
ไม่คาดหวัง ไม่ผิดหวัง (mâi khâat wǎng mâi phìt wǎng) – No expectations, no disappointment
