5S for Productivity Improvement
What is the “5S” (5 ส. – hâa sǒr) system, and why is it used in Thai schools, offices and factories? In this listening lesson, you’ll hear how this Japanese workplace philosophy was adopted in Thailand, and how its five principles can improve not only work environments but everyday life, from putting away a phone charger to finishing a conversation you’ve been putting off, and sharing food hygienically at the Thai dinner table.
The 5 ส.:
สะสาง (sà-sǎang) – Sort / Clear up
สะดวก (sà-dùak) – Convenience / Set in order
สะอาด (sà-àat) – Clean
สุขลักษณะ (sùk-khà-lák-sà-nà) – Hygiene / Standardise
สร้างลักษณะนิสัย (sâang lák-sà-nà ní-sǎi) – Build good habits
You’ll also learn why Thais use a ช้อนกลาง (chɔ́n glaang – serving spoon) when eating together, and how checklists can turn new routines into lasting habits.
