Why “Heart” is Everywhere in Thai

Why do so many Thai words contain ใจ (jai) – heart? This lesson begins with Songkran: with fuel and living costs rising, you might expect Thai people to stay home and save money, yet the roads were as busy as ever. That leads to an observation about how Thai people often make decisions with their hearts rather than logic, followed by a challenge: to speak naturally and continuously while fitting in as many ใจ (jai) words as possible.

Along the way, you’ll hear about trust between strangers, kindness and selfishness in society, honesty at work, relationships, and encouraging others.

Thai Vocabulary:
เข้าใจ (kâo jai) – To understand
เกรงใจ (greeng jai) – To be considerate / not want to impose
ไว้ใจ (wái jai) – To trust
น้ำใจ (náam jai) – Kindness / generosity
กำลังใจ (gam-lang jai) – Encouragement
รัดเข็มขัด (rát kěm-kàt) – To tighten one’s belt (spend less)
