Visiting a Patient

What do you say when visiting someone who is sick or injured in Thailand? This intermediate lesson covers the difference between a patient and an injured person, common illnesses and accidents, and what to expect when visiting a Thai hospital, from ICU restrictions to private rooms and shared wards. You’ll also learn about Thai customs for hospital visits, such as bringing milk, fruit or flowers, and the phrases Thai people use to wish someone a quick recovery.

Thai Vocabulary:
ผู้ป่วย (phûu-bpùai) – Patient
ผู้บาดเจ็บ (phûu bàat-jèp) – Injured person
เจ็บ (jèp) – Hurt / Sharp pain
ปวด (bpùat) – Ache / Lasting pain
ห้องพิเศษ (hɔ̂ng phí-sèet) – Private hospital room
หายเร็วๆนะ (hǎai reo-reo ná) – Get well soon

At the end of the lesson, share your own experience in the comments: have you ever visited someone in hospital, and what did you bring?
