Up & Down
In this Easy Thai lesson, you'll learn how to use ขึ้น (up) and ลง (down), two short words you'll hear everywhere in Thai. First, follow people going up and down stairs, escalators, lifts and even a tree. Then see how the same words describe change: the weather getting hotter or cooler, things increasing or decreasing, feeling better or worse, and the economy improving or declining. You'll also find out why Thai says มากขึ้น but never มากลง.
Thai Vocabulary:
ขึ้น (khʉ̂n) – Up / To go up / To increase
ลง (long) – Down / To go down / To decrease
บันไดเลื่อน (ban-dai lʉ̂an) – Escalator
มากขึ้น (mâak khʉ̂n) – More / Increasingly
น้อยลง (nɔ́ɔi long) – Less / Decreasingly
ดีขึ้น (dii khʉ̂n) – Better / Improved
แย่ลง (yɛ̂ɛ long) – Worse
Listen for the pattern in each example, and you'll soon be using ขึ้น and ลง naturally in your own Thai!
