The Love Legend of Sarasin Bridge
February is the month of love, so this lesson takes you to southern Thailand for one of the country’s most famous love stories: the legend of Sarasin Bridge (สะพานสารสินธุ์ sà-paan sǎa-rá-sǐn), which links Phang Nga and Phuket. In 1973, Ko Dam, a young Thai-Chinese driver of a wooden “pho thong” bus, fell in love with Kiew, a young woman he drove to school every day. Both families tried to keep them apart, and their story ended in tragedy. It later inspired films, TV dramas and the song “Ko Dam”.
After the story, you’ll go through the song’s lyrics line by line, exploring poetic language, word pairs and old-fashioned expressions so you can understand the song more deeply and enjoy it even more.
