Thais Slow Walking

Why do Thai people walk so slowly? This lesson answers that common question with a personal story, from walking quickly as a child to gradually slowing down as an adult. You’ll find out how Thailand’s hot weather, sweat, body odour and salt stains on clothes affect the way people move. You’ll also see why browsing market stalls and street vendors encourages a relaxed pace, and why Thais in a hurry don’t walk faster but hop on a motorcycle taxi or take a taxi instead, even for short distances.

Thai Vocabulary:
เดินช้า (dəən cháa) – To walk slowly
เหงื่อออก (ngʉ̀a òok) – To sweat
ขี้เกลือ (khîi-glʉa) – Salt stains (from dried sweat)
วินมอเตอร์ไซค์ (win mɔɔ-təə-sai) – Motorcycle taxi

At the end, think about why you might walk faster than Thai people. Is it a habit from living somewhere cold? Share your ideas in the comments!
