Thai Proverbs 2
Continuing the series on Thai idioms, proverbs and sayings, this lesson explores สุภาษิต (sù-paa-sìt), proverbs: wise words meant to teach, warn, and be useful in everyday life. Learn the meaning of เจตนา (jèt-dtà-naa), intention, and what it means when someone’s วาจาเป็นสุภาษิต (waa-jaa bpen sù-paa-sìt), meaning their words are always wise and helpful.
You’ll hear examples from Buddhist teachings, Chinese proverbs and the Suphasit Phra Ruang, including:
ปิดทองหลังพระ (bpìt tɔɔng lǎng prá) – Doing good without seeking recognition
ตนแลเป็นที่พึ่งแห่งตน (dton lɛɛ bpen tîi pʉ̂ng hɛ̀ng dton) – You are your own refuge
จงเตือนตนด้วยตน (jong dtʉan dton dûay dton) – Be your own conscience
ฟังหูไว้หู (fang hǔu wái hǔu) – Take what you hear with a grain of salt
Each proverb is explained with its cultural background and real-life examples.
