Temple

Step inside a Thai temple and discover what happens there! This Easy Thai lesson explores the different parts of a วัด (wát): the temple walls, the sala, the ordination hall with its Buddha images, the crematorium, and the monks’ living quarters. You’ll learn about Buddhist holy days, giving alms to monks in the morning, and what to do when you visit a temple. That includes how to dress, taking off your shoes, lighting incense and candles, chanting, bowing, and the polite way to sit. You’ll also learn special words that are used only for monks.

Thai Vocabulary:
วัด (wát) – Temple
พระสงฆ์ (prá sǒng) – Buddhist monk
วันพระ (wan prá) – Buddhist holy day
ใส่บาตร (sài bàat) – To give alms to monks
จำวัด (jam wát) – To sleep (used for monks)
กราบ (gràap) – To prostrate / bow down

This is a great introduction to Thai Buddhist culture and the customs you’ll see at temples all over Thailand!
