Suriyothai

Who was Queen Suriyothai, and why do Thai people still remember her today? Inspired by Thailand’s national costume at Miss Universe 2024, this lesson tells the story of the Ayutthaya queen who rode an elephant into battle to protect her husband. Along the way, you’ll learn how to start telling a story in Thai, how Thai history is divided into the Sukhothai, Ayutthaya and Rattanakosin eras, and some essential royal vocabulary. You’ll also pick up expressions like ยกทัพ and วีรกรรม that Thai people still use playfully today.

Thai Vocabulary:
เรื่องมีอยู่ว่า (rʉ̂ang mii yùu wâa) – The story goes...
วีรกรรม (wii-rá-gam) – Heroic deed / Exploit
วีรสตรี (wii-rá-sàt-trii) – Heroine

Learning Thai through history helps you understand the culture behind the language and remember new words more naturally. Keep listening, keep learning, and enjoy your Thai journey with every story!
