Handful

In this Easy Thai lesson, you'll learn how to describe simple hand movements and practise telling apart Thai words that sound very similar. You'll hear them used when ordering papaya salad with chilli, long beans and vegetables, before discovering a popular Thai idiom that describes having someone completely under your control.

Thai Vocabulary:
กำมือ (gam mʉʉ) – To make a fist
แบมือ (bae mʉʉ) – To open your hand
พลิก (phlík) – To flip / turn over
พริก (phrík) – Chilli
กรัม (gram) – Gram
ส้มตำ (sôm-tam) – Papaya salad
ถั่วฝักยาว (tùa fàk yaao) – Long beans
ผัก (phàk) – Vegetables
ลูกไก่ในกำมือ (lûuk gài nai gam mʉʉ) – "A chick in the palm of one's hand" (someone completely under another person's control)

Listen closely to hear the difference between similar sounds, and keep practising them out loud!
