Family Trip

Why do many Thai people go to the beach in jeans while foreigners wear swimsuits? In this Thai lesson, you’ll discover what really happens when Thai families travel together. You’ll hear who pays for the trip, why the whole kitchen gets packed (pots, pans, a gas stove, and even a mortar and pestle for som tam), and how families happily sit on the floor and eat together wherever they stop.

The lesson then explores how family expectations shape Thai behaviour, from modest dress at the beach to children not daring to share their opinions, and how Thai society is gradually becoming more open with each new generation.

Thai Vocabulary:
เที่ยวกันเป็นครอบครัว (tîao gan bpen krâwp-krua) – To travel as a family
ค่าใช้จ่าย (kâa chái jàai) – Expenses
เครื่องครัว (krʉ̂ang krua) – Kitchenware
ครกกับสาก (krók gàp sàak) – Mortar and pestle
ชุดว่ายน้ำ (chút wâai náam) – Swimsuit
ความคาดหวัง (kwaam kâat wǎng) – Expectations
