Earthquake

Learn the Thai words you’ll hear in news reports and safety announcements during an earthquake. Recorded on the day of the March 2025 earthquake felt across Bangkok and northern Thailand, this lesson covers what happened, what to do if you’re outdoors, driving, or inside a building, and what to prepare in an emergency kit. You’ll also discover why หาก (hàak) is used instead of ถ้า (thâa) in formal announcements, and why Thai people now say เมียนมาร์ (mian-maa) rather than พม่า (phá-mâa).

Thai Vocabulary:
แผ่นดินไหว (phàen-din wǎi) – Earthquake
ตั้งสติ (tâng sà-tì) – Stay calm / Pull yourself together
ตื่นตระหนก (dtʉ̀ʉn dtrà-nòk) – To panic
หมอบ (mòop) – To crouch down
ถล่ม (thà-lòm) – To collapse
ชุดปฐมพยาบาล (chút bpà-thǒm phá-yaa-baan) – First aid kit

Stay safe, and keep building your Thai one lesson at a time!
