Age and Respect in Thai Culture

Why do Thai people ask your age so soon after meeting you? This lesson explores how age shapes almost every part of Thai communication: who should wai first, how to address someone, and even who can be friends. In English you can just say “sister” or “brother”, but Thai almost always shows who is older and who is younger. Knowing this is essential for showing respect. You’ll also hear how this cultural difference works in reverse, and what it means for Thai speakers learning English.

Understanding the link between age and respect will help you speak Thai more naturally and connect more closely with Thai culture.

Thai Vocabulary:
อายุ (aa-yú) – Age
เคารพ (kao-róp) – To respect
ไหว้ (wâi) – To wai (respectful greeting)
พี่สาว (pîi sǎao) – Older sister
น้องสาว (nɔ́ɔng sǎao) – Younger sister
